Fixer-Upper Friday

For today's fixer-upper Friday, I'll be showing you this gorgeous mid-century Singer sewing desk! While doing my normal weekly visit to my local Goodwill, I came across this dusty, and rusty (I promise I'm not trying to rhyme!) old Singer sewing desk. It appeared to be in pretty bad shape, what with one of the legs hanging on by a thread and one of the cover plates for the desk covering the sewing machine missing. The price was $5 though, so I couldn't pass it up! After some cleaning and tightening of the screws that attach the leg to the desk, it started to look quite well! Then I fully brought out the sewing machine and started to wipe it down. Before it appeared to be rusted, but in fact it was just covered in layers and layers of dust. It cleaned up really nicely!

The true test was plugging it in and seeing if the machine actually worked, and lo and behold the Singer gods shined down on me! The machine appears to be working quite well for how old it is! After doing some research, my sewing machine is a Singer Stylist Zig-Zag Model 457. It was made in 1969, and it appears to be the "upper" model of the two machines that were released then. The reason being is because it has, and I quote, dropping feed dogs (I'm new to this so I have no idea what that means!).

I'm quite ecstatic with my amazing find, and can't wait to start sewing my 50's/60's clothing on it! Keep watch and in the future you will see my clothes that I make!

I love the cream color of the machine, it's a far cry from the avocado greens and citron yellows.

The chair is one that we've had sitting around our house for awhile now, as far as I know my fiance's family has had for quite some time! I put a Better Homes and Garden sewing book (that I love looking through and actually use), a vintage sunflower handkerchief, and two vintage cookie tins on the corner. In the background on the right you can see my mid-century china cabinet that I got awhile back. I will show you the pieces that I have in it in a future post!

I might not post anything until Sunday, so I hope everyone has a good weekend!
